3 Tips To Help You Get Better At Working Out

July 20, 2018

"It's not about getting better at the workout, but getting better at working out."

Take some time to process that.

With workouts programmed for time, workouts with time caps, and team based wod's (WOD = Workout Of The Day)...

It's easy to get distracted by just your performance.

"Why didn't I do better?"

"Why did it take me so long to finish?"

"How come I didn't finish in the time cap?"

But it's important to remember that your one performance or getting better at that one type of workout isn't going to matter in the big picture.

Instead, keep your focus on getting better at working out.

What does this mean?

It means working out, like many things, is a skill.

A skill that needs to be:
- Practiced
- Reviewed for strengths and weaknesses
- Adjusted appropriately for you individually to keep progressing.
- Practiced some more.

3 Tips To Help You Get Better At Working Out

1. Be Consistent
Many of you already do this exceptionally well and have made this a habit but I encourage you to consistently review and adjust.

Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

For those who may struggle a bit, my coaching tip is to schedule all your workouts for the week and prioritize it.

As the saying goes:

"Don't prioritize your schedule, schedule your priorities"

2. Bring attention and Focus to your Workouts
It's easy to just show up and go through the motions, and I get it - some days we need to "just get through it".

But when it comes to making progress, you need to do more, you need to be present.

Before you start working out, ask yourself "What am I trying to get out of today."

- Focus on better movements
- Focus on working for the full work periods without stopping
- Focus on intensity and working hard to stay in an uncomfortable zone
- Focus on better strategy

Pick something and work hard at it.

3. No Whining. No Complaining

Whining and complaining can quickly poison your mindset and lead you down a road with no U turn.

Bring a positive attitude not just for yourself but also for the people that train with you in sessions and in class.

It's a disease so Don't spread it.

Bonus Tip...

4. Do Your Best and Be Stoked About That

There's no use in comparing yourself to others. Yes, it's fine to use training partners to help push and motivate you but remember...

You create your own Merit.

You have your own work to do - go work your tail off and leave knowing you gave it your all.

And...

That's an incredible accomplishment!

Takeaway...

As you focus on getting better at working out you'll start to notice performance improve, better movement every workout, more results that last, workout times drop, and so on...

There's no shortcuts to better fitness, you have to build it brick by brick but I think that's why we all love it so much!
