Reign Member Spotlight | Calvin H.

In an effort to get to know our Reign Fitness Community better, we like to feature a member each month who showcases our core values...

"Being Coachable, Confident, Hungry, Positive, and Humble."

And for August 2020, We couldn't pick anyone more deserving of the spotlight then this awesome guy who is always putting in work, encouraging others, and contributing so much to our community...

Calvin is always challenging himself to keep improving and continues to make fitness a priority in his life. I've never seen him reject coaching or have an ego.

And the guy is just an all around good dude!

He is always smiling and brings great energy regardless of what's going on his life. He leaves everything at the door and comes in to the gym ready to work on himself. Could not imagine the Reign Community without him and I truly hope others will get to know him a little like I do through this Member Spotlight!

Here is Calvin...

1. How did you get started at Reign and what did you do before?

I started after moving to the Renton area in 2018. Reina had found the gym online and had nothing but positive things to say after a few classes. I had been working out at Gold’s Gym and at work. My programming was based all on my own research. had been melting together various techniques which, looking back at it now, was not really working out.

2. Where are you from and where are all the places you've lived?

Growing up in a military family, you don’t find the answer to this question ever easy to answer. The longest place I have lived somewhere, prior to Seattle, was Chicago (5 years). But I have lived in Arizona x2, California, Japan, Florida x2, North Carolina, South Carolina, Vancouver (Wa), Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, finally Seattle.

3. What's your favorite Fitness Movement?

Prior to Reign it was of course the bench, but after getting the correct technique and instruction, I LOVE squats and deadlifts. I never thought I would love leg day, but here I am.

4. If you were a coffee drink, what would you be and why?

French press drip.

Complicated, fun to make, full of flavor, can be changed a bit to match the situation.

5. If you could only have one meal the rest of your life, what would it be?

Street tacos from Taco Chukis

6. What is the craziest thing you've ever witnessed in your line of work?

…next question please.

7. What is your favorite book and why?

I have never been a big reader at all, however, I have read Fahrenheit 451 countless times. Every time I read it, I find something different I can relate to. I believe it is a huge take on our society, more so now than ever.

8. What would be the autobiography of your life?

In terms of the title or a current work? Im not sure if I can think of a book, but if my autobiography was made for a movie. The Truman Show.

9. What superpower would you want to possess?

Ability to see through someone else’s eyes.

10. What is the most important lesson you've had to learn?

After becoming a police officer, you are forced to realize the world in which you knew no longer exists. However, you MUST LEARN not to let that change you. I have had several run ins with this thought and have worked very hard to not give into it. There is an overused quote by Nietzsche which rings true

“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.”

11. What's your favorite memory from Reign?

Murph of 2019, I remember the run out and back. Everyone was so outgoing. Encouraging each other to keep going and reminding them that they are doing a good job. I knew at that moment I had found a place that I belonged.
